Democratic Republic of the Congo implements distance learning in Ebola high-risk zones

The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is implementing a differentiated approach to the 2026-2027 school year to mitigate the impact of the progressing Ebola epidemic. In 18 high-risk health zones, authorities will prioritize distance learning to prevent large gatherings and reduce virus transmission.

Minister of National Education Raïssa Malu, alongside the Ministers of Public Health and Communication, announced that the strategy uses a color-coded risk classification system (green, orange, and red) to tailor responses to specific regions. This approach aims to prevent controlled areas from escalating into high-transmission zones while avoiding a total national school closure.

To address the digital divide, the distance learning model will rely on a hybrid system of radio broadcasts and printed materials. This includes the monthly distribution of educational booklets to ensure pedagogical continuity in areas with limited internet access.
