Democratic Republic of the Congo opposition leader alleges financial mismanagement
Congolese opposition figure Olivier Kamitatu has raised alarms regarding the management of public finances in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for 2025. Citing an independent review of budget execution, Kamitatu claimed that national funds are not being directed toward intended developmental goals.
According to the analysis, which is based on 128,579 entries from the Central Bank of the Congo’s general Treasury account, only 5% of the budget has been executed for investment, despite 97% of revenues being collected. The report highlights significant financial irregularities, including over $300 million in cash withdrawals and approximately $2.9 billion in payments that were regularized after the fact. Kamitatu noted that a substantial portion of these regularizations, totaling nearly $2.9 billion, occurred on a single day, June 27, 2025.
Kamitatu clarified that the document is not an official report from the Court of Auditors or the General Inspectorate of Finance, but rather the work of a whistleblower. He emphasized that while the findings require verification by competent institutions, the data suggests a significant drift in state financial management.
