Democratic shifts and global Jewish connectivity highlighted in Budapest
In Budapest, recent political developments and international gatherings have highlighted themes of democratic resilience and global community building. Following the defeat of Viktor Orbán after 16 years in power, pro-democracy activists in Hungary are reflecting on the transition from an illiberal democracy to a new political era. Activists, who previously believed systemic change would take decades, are now engaging in dialogue regarding the strategies used to combat populism.
Simultaneously, the inaugural cohort of Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s ‘Voice of the People’ initiative concluded its term in Budapest. The initiative brought together a global network of council members to foster connections across the Jewish diaspora. Participants noted that despite regional tensions and the impact of recent conflicts, the program served as a laboratory for innovation and a means to build lasting global bridges.
