Democratic socialism sparks party tension and economic scrutiny
Internal tensions are rising within the Democratic Party regarding the influence of democratic socialism. Senator Bernie Sanders has defended socialist-aligned figures, suggesting that those who disagree with the movement's direction should form their own political party.
Simultaneously, a report from the White House Council of Economic Advisors (CEA) has analyzed the potential costs of several socialist-aligned policy proposals. The CEA estimates that ‘Medicare for All’ could cost approximately $47.41 trillion over ten years and lead to a 22 percent decline in medical productivity.
Other analyzed policies include the cancellation of student debt and free tuition, projected to cost between $2.1 trillion and $3.6 trillion over a decade, which the report notes may disproportionately benefit wealthier households. Additionally, implementing a 32-hour workweek while maintaining current pay levels is estimated to cost $918 billion, with models predicting a 1.5 percent annual contraction in GDP and a decline in employment.
