Democratic socialist candidates gain ground in US primaries

Democratic socialist candidates are increasingly finding success in Democratic primaries across the United States, from Maine to California. This trend follows a long-term strategy to build power by running within the existing two-party structure rather than through third parties, a method similar to how the MAGA movement captured the Republican Party.

However, data suggests these victories may be limited to safe Democratic districts. While candidates like Angie Nixon have won primaries, they often face significant challenges in general elections. In a recent Wisconsin gubernatorial primary, Democratic Socialist Francesca Hong lost in a competitive swing state.

Polling indicates that the label of socialism remains a political liability in general elections. According to YouGov data, public favorability for socialism has not exceeded 33 percent since 2015, and 45 percent of Americans report they would never vote for a self-identified socialist.
