Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros Wins Colorado Congressional Primary

Melat Kiros, a 29‑year‑old Democratic Socialist, defeated incumbent Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District Democratic primary, earning 51.3% of the vote to DeGette’s 41.7%. Young urban voters, especially renters and residents of neighborhoods with large Hispanic and Black populations, formed the core of Kiros’s support.

Kiros received endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders and the progressive group Our Revolution. After the win, she attracted controversy for statements linking U.S. foreign policy to the 9/11 attacks and describing the Oct. 7 Hamas assault as “inevitable,” drawing criticism from opponents.

The victory reflects a growing influence of progressive candidates in the district, which is demographically diverse, with a majority of residents identifying as white, Hispanic, Black, or Asian and a median household income around $71,000.
