Democratic Socialists of America gain foothold in US primaries

Members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) secured primary victories in New York, Colorado, Washington, D.C. and other districts, expanding the group's influence within the Democratic Party. The wins have drawn sharp criticism from President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly labeled the candidates as “communists,” stating, “I want to get the word out, because what’s forming is communism in the country.”

DSA leaders and affiliated activists describe their agenda as a complete overhaul of the free‑market system, aiming for public ownership of industries and universal housing and health programs. DSA co‑chair Matty Jackson said, “We are trying to abolish the system of capital and replace it with a system of socialism.” The organization’s internal debates focus on whether to pursue a broad‑tent “mass politics” strategy or a more sectarian approach, but all factions agree on a goal of replacing capitalism with socialism.

The rising prominence of socialist candidates comes as the 2025 midterm elections approach, prompting both intra‑party discussion and external political attacks.
