Democratic Socialists of America gains electoral foothold as internal caucuses reshape strategy
Members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have secured several recent electoral victories, including New York State Assembly member Zohran Mamdani, Colorado House member Melat Kiros, and other progressive candidates. Their success has amplified the DSA’s presence within the Democratic Party and spurred a focus on expanding influence into battleground states such as Michigan and Wisconsin.
At the DSA’s 2025 national convention in Chicago, six caucuses vying for leadership displayed distinct strategic orientations. The Groundwork and Socialist Majority caucuses, which together captured roughly 36% of the first‑round vote for the National Political Committee, advocate using Democratic primaries to advance socialist goals while rejecting an independent third‑party approach. The Bread & Roses and Marxist Unity Group caucuses, receiving about 21% of the vote, emphasize mass‑movement building, opposition to military intervention, and the pursuit of a socialist revolution.
More radical factions, Springs of Revolution and Red Star, focus on anti‑imperialist politics and a Marxist‑Leninist vision, respectively, and have also secured representation on the party’s leadership body. These internal dynamics illustrate the DSA’s growing electoral relevance and the competing visions shaping its future direction within American politics.
