Democratic Socialists of America Reject Member Poll, Face New York Chapter Split Threat

The Democratic Socialists of America’s National Political Committee voted 14‑13 to reject a proposed all‑member poll on a potential 2028 presidential endorsement, leaving any endorsement for a future 2027 convention. The decision intensified a dispute between factions that differ on whether to back Rep. Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez early.

In response, DSA members circulated a petition urging unity and opposing a split of the New York City chapter, which has been at odds with the national body after the poll rejection. The petition cited accusations that the national committee was limiting members’ voting rights while the NYC chapter contributes about $2 million annually. Fewer than 200 members had signed the petition as of Monday, including six of the committee’s 27 members. DSA’s nationwide membership stands at roughly 120,000.
