Democratic Socialists of America surges after New York mayoral victory

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) saw its membership jump sharply following Zohran Mamdani's win in the New York City mayoral election. The party’s New York chapter grew from about 5,000 members to roughly 15,000, while national membership rose from around 50,000 to about 100,000 by February.

DSA candidates are shifting recruitment toward college campuses and leveraging social‑media platforms, presenting rallies as nightclub‑style events and using TikTok videos to reach younger voters. Other DSA hopefuls such as Claire Valdez and Abdul El‑Sayed have adopted similar strategies in races across the United States.
