Democratic Socialists Secure House Seats in New York Primaries

In New York’s June 23 Democratic primary, three candidates backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America won congressional races. In the 13th District, DSA member Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated five‑term incumbent Adriano Espaillat 49.4% to 45.9%, gaining strong support from younger, college‑educated and higher‑income precincts. In the 7th District, DSA‑aligned assemblywoman Claire Valdez beat Brooklyn borough president Antonio Reynoso 56.1% to 35.8% with similar demographic advantages. The 10th District also saw a DSA‑endorsed candidate prevail. Precinct data show that the socialist candidates performed best in affluent, densely‑populated neighborhoods, while lower‑income and non‑college‑educated voters tended to support their opponents. Chevalier won majorities in white and Black precincts, whereas Espaillat retained strength in majority‑Hispanic areas. Valdez’s victory was notable among white and Hispanic voters, while Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods favored Reynoso and historically leaned Republican. These results illustrate the growing influence of young, educated voters in urban Democratic contests.
