Democratic Socialists Win New York Primaries, Trigger GOP Alarm

Democratic Socialists, many affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), captured several Democratic primary races in New York, including victories by Brad Lander, Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez. Their wins were backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a self‑identified democratic socialist. Similar upsets occurred in Colorado, where Melat Kiros defeated an incumbent in a heavily Democratic district.

Republican strategist Karl Rove warned on Fox News that the rise of these socialist candidates could pose a greater internal challenge to the Democratic Party than the Tea Party did the Republicans. He cautioned that if Democrats secure a narrow House majority, the presence of dozens of socialist legislators could complicate leadership decisions, including the speaker’s role under Hakeem Jeffries.
