Skopje municipal language law breach prompts DUI call for inspectorate director's resignation

The Agency for Language Use (DUI) says the Skopje municipality twice violated the law that obliges city institutions to use Albanian alongside Macedonian on official communications. DUI claims the city ignored the bilingual requirement on entrance signage and accuses the municipal leadership of contempt for both the law and the Albanian community.

DUI demanded the immediate resignation of the director of the Inspectorate for Language Use, stating: "Во оваа ситуација, прашањето е едноставно: каде е Инспекторатот за употреба на јазиците?" The agency also held the VLEN authority responsible for paralyzing the inspectorate.

The Democratic Union for Integration (BDI) echoed these concerns, describing the exclusion of Albanian from the signs as a "provokim i rëndë politik dhe institucional" and urging the rapid correction of the signage to comply with legal provisions and the city’s multi‑ethnic character. Both DUI and BDI said they would pursue legal and institutional measures if the law is not enforced. Municipal and agency officials have not responded publicly.
