Democratic Union of Teachers threatens strikes over wages

The Democratic Union of Teachers (PDSZ) has issued an ultimatum to Education and Children Minister Judit Lannert, warning of potential strikes at the start of the new school year. The union is demanding a resolution regarding the wages of staff supporting education and child care (NOKS workers).

Erzsébet Nagy, the PDSZ legal representative, stated that if workers do not receive at least a legal guarantee for upcoming pay raises, the union will assess strike readiness and begin organizing industrial action. The union is seeking a 40 percent wage increase and a gross salary of 720,000 HUF for highly qualified staff to match the lowest teacher salaries.

Minister Lannert has previously noted that while the issue has been presented to the government, the current budget situation makes resolving the matter difficult, stating that the treasury is empty.
