Democrats hold 10-point advantage over Republicans in Gallup poll

New Gallup polling data indicates a significant shift in American political affiliation ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Democrats currently hold a 10-percentage-point advantage over Republicans, with 49% of respondents identifying as Democrats or leaning toward the party, compared to 39% who identify as Republicans or lean Republican.

This represents a major reversal from late 2024, when Republicans held a 4-point lead. This is the largest Democratic advantage in party identification recorded by Gallup since 2008. The shift is largely attributed to a decline in President Donald Trump’s popularity, driven by concerns over inflation, the cost of living, and the ongoing conflict in Iran.

While the Democratic Party is seeing increased identification, analysts note that much of this movement is among independent voters. A record 45% of Americans now identify as independents, while only 27% identify strictly as Democrats or Republicans. This trend suggests a growing detachment from the two-party system even as the Democratic Party gains a temporary edge in the current political climate.
