Democrats hold early voting lead in midterm elections
Early voting and mail-in ballot data indicate a significant lead for Democrats in the current midterm elections. According to state election data compiled by TargetSmart and NBC News, Democrats account for 54% of early and mail-in votes submitted so far, while Republicans represent 30% and independents or other voters make up 16%.
This trend is visible in several competitive Senate contests. In Michigan, registered Democrats comprise 55% of early voters compared to 36% for Republicans. Iowa shows a similar pattern with Democrats at 57% and Republicans at 29%. In Maine, Democrats hold a 55%-to-19% advantage among early voters. In Nebraska, a traditionally Republican-leaning state, the Democratic early-vote advantage has widened to 45% compared to 38% for Republicans, up from a 44%-to-41% margin in 2022.
Analysts note that while these figures suggest a Democratic enthusiasm advantage, the totals may also reflect broader surges in participation or the established habits of reliable voters. The data reflects who has cast a ballot thus far rather than specific candidate support.
