Democrats in Montenegro propose one additional monthly day off

The Democratic party in Montenegro is revising a legislative proposal to grant all employees one additional day of leave per month. While the original June proposal suggested a non-working Friday to create extended weekends, the updated version will allow the day off to occur at any time, rather than necessarily being tied to a weekend.

MP Duško Stjepović stated that the revision aims to address concerns raised by business representatives regarding the applicability of the law to professions that do not follow a standard five-day work week. The party suggests that for such services, the day off could be “refunded” in a different manner.

The initial proposal faced opposition from the Economic Chamber of Montenegro (PKCG) and the Union of Employers (UPCG), who noted a lack of prior consultation with social partners. The Democrats are currently engaging in discussions with major trade unions and intend to consult with the Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Social Dialogue to refine the amendment to the Labour Law before it reaches the parliamentary plenary session.
