Democrats may retake House and Senate control, analysts suggest
Political analyst Charlie Cook suggests that Democrats retaking the House of Representatives appears to be a “done deal,” while winning control of the Senate has become “very realistic.” Cook estimates Democrats could potentially gain approximately 20 House seats and four to five Senate seats, noting competitive races in states such as Michigan, North Carolina, Alaska, Iowa, New Hampshire, and Minnesota.
Cook attributes this shift to a midterm pattern where supporters of the president’s party show decreased motivation, while opposition voters and independents move away from the governing party. He characterized the current political climate as a “red undertow” rather than a uniform wave.
Polling data provides additional context for these assessments. A Reuters/Ipsos survey indicated that Democrats held an eight-point advantage over Republicans regarding which party respondents would support for Congress. Meanwhile, Decision Desk HQ’s forecasting model has treated the contest for control of both chambers as competitive.
