Democrats shift strategies amid Republican transgender issue ads

Democratic candidates are adopting new strategies to counter a surge of Republican advertising focused on transgender issues. Following a period of party reflection, some Democrats in competitive races are responding more forcefully by expressing opposition to transgender athletes in girls' sports or criticizing transgender “ideology.”

While some candidates are attempting to reconcile past positions under scrutiny, others are downplaying the topic by noting that existing state laws already address these matters. These shifts have caused internal friction; some party members and advocates fear the marginalization of the transgender community, while others believe these tactics are necessary to defuse the issue with voters.

A CNN poll indicated that while transgender issues ranked lower in importance than the economy for midterm voters, the GOP held an edge on the topic. Data from AdImpact shows that Republican advertisers have spent over $60 million on more than 190 television ads referencing transgender policies since the start of the year. In Ohio, Representative Marcy Kaptur faced criticism from local Democrats for running ads that align with Republican messaging regarding transgender ideology in schools.
