Democrats stay silent as Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner's past posts spark controversy

Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate seat from Maine, has faced renewed scrutiny after thousands of his old online comments resurfaced. The posts, dating back to 2013, include a Nazi‑style tattoo, mocking a Purple Heart recipient, praising Hamas tactics and victim‑blaming remarks about sexual assault.

Top Democratic leaders, including Senate Majority Whip Hakeem Jeffries, Senate President Chuck Schumer, Senators Elizabeth Warren, Dick Durbin, Cory Booker and Peter Welch, either declined to comment or said they were not closely following the race. Their silence comes as the Maine contest is viewed by national Democrats as a key opportunity to flip the seat held by Republican incumbent Susan Collins, who has won re‑election despite Maine’s recent Democratic lean in presidential elections.

The controversy has become a focal point for Republican attacks, while the Democratic establishment has so far avoided direct condemnation or endorsement of Platner. The outcome of the race will hinge on whether Maine voters accept Platner despite the revelations.
