Democrats sue Trump administration to block armed agents at polling sites
Democratic leaders and campaign organizations have filed a federal lawsuit in Washington to prevent the Trump administration from deploying armed federal agents to polling locations during the upcoming November midterm elections.
The lawsuit, which includes Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, argues that even the threat of such deployments violates the Voting Rights Act and the Administrative Procedure Act. Plaintiffs contend that the presence of armed officers, such as those from ICE or the FBI, could intimidate voters—particularly naturalized citizens—and discourage them from exercising their right to vote.
While the administration has stated there is no formal plan to station agents at polling sites, several high-ranking officials have declined to rule out their presence. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin indicated that immigration agents could appear to serve warrants or respond to threats, and FBI Director Kash Patel suggested agents might attend polling sites if there is a reason to believe a law has been violated. President Trump has also stated he would do “anything necessary” to ensure honest elections, without ruling out the use of the National Guard or immigration agents.
