Democratic leaders sue Trump administration over election interference allegations

Democratic Party leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have filed a federal lawsuit against President Donald Trump and his administration. The suit alleges that the administration is attempting to intimidate and coerce state and local election officials and is unlawfully attempting to usurp state authority over election administration.

The litigation follows a Department of Justice (DOJ) effort in California to block the counting of mail-in ballots from approximately 20,000 voters whom federal agencies have identified as likely noncitizens. The DOJ is seeking an emergency order to have these ballots segregated until citizenship can be verified. California officials have challenged the request, citing a lack of evidence and methodology.

In a separate legal action, the Arlington County Board in Virginia has sued to prevent armed federal agents from appearing at polling places, citing concerns over voter intimidation. Meanwhile, a federal judge in Northern California has placed limits on Department of Homeland Security operations intended to identify noncitizen voter fraud, ruling that such sweeps have intimidated U.S. citizens.
