Democrats target Tennessee's 9th District with support for Justin Pearson

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has added Tennessee State Representative Justin Pearson to its ‘Red to Blue’ priority list, targeting the state’s 9th Congressional District. The move is part of a broader national strategy to compete in conservative areas, even in districts where Donald Trump won by significant margins.

The 9th District was recently redrawn by the Republican-controlled state legislature, shifting it from a Democratic stronghold to a seat that Trump won by more than 21 points in 2024. Pearson noted that the redistricting made the race significantly more difficult by combining parts of Memphis with 14 rural counties.

Strategists suggest the expansion serves two purposes: forcing Republicans to divert financial resources to defend safe seats and signaling to donors that the party is serious about expanding its battlefield. Inclusion on the DCCC list provides Pearson with organizational support, financial resources, and strategic training.
