Democrats weigh economic normalcy against impeachment strategy for 2026 midterms

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, Democrats are navigating a strategic divide regarding their approach to President Donald Trump. In battleground districts, many candidates are adopting a “normalcy playbook,” focusing on local economic concerns and kitchen-table issues to appeal to “double haters”—voters dissatisfied with both major parties. This strategy aims to move away from national partisan rhetoric to secure a House majority.

A Democratic takeover of the House would grant the party significant constitutional authorities, including the power to initiate impeachment proceedings, issue subpoenas, and conduct expansive investigations into the Trump administration. However, party leadership remains divided on whether pursuing a third impeachment is a viable tactical move.

In New York's 17th District, Republican Representative Mike Lawler has emerged as a significant figure. Despite the district being carried by Kamala Harris in 2024, some Democratic strategists are hesitant to invest heavily in a challenge against Lawler, citing his centrist positioning and the high cost of the New York media market. Currently, Republicans are outspending Democrats by a ratio of more than 40 to 1 in ad reservations for that district.
