Democrazia Cristiana faces internal leadership dispute

An internal conflict has emerged within the Democrazia Cristiana (DC) between acting national secretary Gianpiero Samorì and Carmelo Pace. Samorì has challenged the legitimacy of organizational decisions issued by Pace following a national leadership meeting, labeling them “legally non-existent, null, and illegitimate.”

Samorì contends that the National Council's resolution declaring Pace as secretary is void, which subsequently invalidates the national leadership meeting he convened. He asserted that the party must adhere to statutory rules and is no longer the “personal party of Senator Salvatore Cuffaro.”

To resolve the rift, Samorì announced the convening of regional congresses to elect delegates for the DC National Congress, scheduled for October 24–25, 2026, in Rome. This follows a decision by the National Directorate to implement a deep internal reorganization and the removal of regional commissioners not selected by the Directorate, including the suspension of Salvatore Giuffrida in Sicily.
