Democritus University of Thrace to add 700 student housing spots
The Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Sofia Zacharaki, met with the elected Rector of Democritus University of Thrace, Professor Maria Michalopoulou, to discuss the university’s development plan.
A central component of the plan is the creation of two new student housing complexes through the SDIT program, providing 700 total beds: 350 in Komotini and 350 in Alexandroupoli. The contract with the contractor is expected to be signed in the second half of 2026.
Additional infrastructure projects include the construction of university residences (12 in Komotini and 24 in Alexandroupoli), a guest house, a new Central Library in Komotini, and a modern Center of Excellence for Research in Xanthi. The university is also planning a new Department of Veterinary Medicine and exploring the establishment of a branch in Cairo.
Furthermore, the university’s dormitories in Komotini will be included in a national €226.36 million energy upgrade program funded by the Social Climate Fund, with tenders expected to begin in 2027.
