Demographic aging challenges labor markets in Argentina and Spain
Demographic shifts and aging populations are creating significant challenges for labor markets and pension systems in Argentina and Spain. In Argentina, experts note that increasing life expectancy requires a broader debate than just raising the retirement age, as workers face fragmented career paths and technological changes that may push them out of the workforce prematurely.
In Spain, projections from the Fundación Adecco and INE indicate a looming workforce shortage. Between 2030 and 2050, the Spanish labor-age population (16 to 64 years) is expected to decrease by approximately 1.8 million people. Conversely, the population over 64 is projected to grow by over 41%, reaching 16.3 million by 2050. This shift threatens to narrow the demographic base supporting economic activity and social protection systems, particularly impacting sectors like tourism and hospitality.
These demographic trends are driving a need for new organizational models. The traditional structure of linear careers and homogeneous work schedules is being challenged by a more diverse workforce, including students seeking early employment, senior professionals desiring part-time roles, and individuals prioritizing flexibility.
