Demographic shifts in Romania and new migration policies in Sweden

In Romania, recent data from the National Institute of Statistics indicates a shift in residency patterns. Approximately 76,000 people, including adolescents and adults, chose to move from major cities to rural areas last year. This brings the rural population to 7.4 million, representing 47.4% of the country's residents aged 16 and over.

Despite this migration to the countryside, rural living conditions remain a challenge. Approximately 24.5% of rural households lack indoor bathrooms or showers due to underdeveloped water and sewage systems. Additionally, the prevalence of washing machines in rural areas is 10.6 percentage points lower than in urban centers, where 98.5% of families possess the appliance.

Separately, Sweden has implemented a new migration policy offering up to 32,000 euros to migrants who agree to leave the country and return to their nations of origin. This represents a significant increase in financial assistance for those choosing voluntary repatriation.
