Demographic shifts in Sardinia: Olbia grows as Alghero declines

Demographic data for Sardinia reveals contrasting trends between Olbia and Alghero. According to reports from Sardegna Immigrazione, the island as a whole lost 103,648 inhabitants between 2016 and 2025.

Olbia is bucking this regional trend, reaching a population of 61,739 by January 1, 2026. This growth is driven largely by migration rather than births; data from the Centro Studi Cipnessu indicates that while the natural balance was negative by 47 units, migration from both within Italy and abroad provided a net increase. The city also hosts over 6,000 foreign residents, accounting for approximately 9.74% of its population. Additionally, Olbia's airport saw significant activity, recording over 4 million passengers in 2025.

In contrast, Alghero is facing a demographic crisis characterized by population decline and aging. As of January 1, 2026, the city had 41,765 residents, a decrease from 42,281 in 2024. The population structure is shifting significantly, with the number of residents aged 75 and older increasing by 37.1% between 2014 and 2024, while younger demographics have seen substantial decreases. In response, local center-right political groups have proposed the establishment of a special commission to address this demographic emergency.
