Demographic shifts reported in Vorarlberg and Salzburg

Recent demographic data from Austria indicates shifting trends in the population with migration backgrounds. In the state of Vorarlberg, the proportion of people with a migration background decreased from 29.9% to 28.6% in 2025, though it remains the second-highest in the country after Vienna.

In Salzburg, more than a quarter of the population has a migration background, with significant concentrations in urban areas and tourism hubs like Bad Gastein. Nationally, Austria’s population growth is driven almost exclusively by immigration, as deaths have outpaced births since 2020.

Statistical findings show that approximately 70% of those born abroad originate from Europe, with Germans forming the largest group of non-citizens. Educational trends among immigrants show that 27% hold university degrees, compared to 23% of those without a migration background. Additionally, surveys indicate a strong sense of connection to Austria among many immigrants, particularly those from Syria and Afghanistan.
