Demographic trends show varying birth and death rates in Spanish provinces

Recent demographic data from Andalusia reveals contrasting population trends in Granada and Seville. In Granada, the first quarter of 2026 recorded a negative natural growth rate, with 2,242 deaths compared to 1,629 births, resulting in a deficit of 613 people. While births increased by 3.9% and deaths by 0.9% compared to the same period in 2025, the province continues to see more deaths than births.

In Seville, maternal age patterns deviate from the national Spanish trend. Between January and August 2026, births from mothers under the age of 25 accounted for 10.6% of the 9,313 total births, outperforming births from mothers aged 40 or older, which stood at 8.8%. This contrasts with the broader Spanish trend, where maternity at older ages is increasing and currently exceeds births from women in their early twenties.
