Tumbler Ridge Secondary School demolition starts after 2026 shooting

The Peace River South School District has begun dismantling Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, the site of a mass shooting on Feb. 10, 2026. Work started in July and will continue through the summer, with completion expected in the fall. The district says “Every effort is being made to carry out this work in a way that respects the significance of the site and minimizes disruption to students, families, and the broader community.” Furniture and movable items are being removed inside the building, and covered trucks transport debris to regional landfills, avoiding the local Tumbler Ridge landfill.

The February attack claimed nine lives—including five students, a teacher, and the shooter’s mother and step‑brother—and injured 27 others. In response, provincial and federal governments have pledged a combined $200 million to build a new secondary school on a new site, with a trauma‑informed design process guided by community consultations.
