Demon Hunter sues Netflix over ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ trademark

The Seattle-based Christian metal band Demon Hunter, through its company Hyde Lane, has filed a federal trademark lawsuit in California against Netflix, Netflix Studios, and concert promoter AEG Presents. The band alleges trademark infringement, false designation of origin, and unfair competition regarding the title of the hit animated film ‘KPop Demon Hunters’.

Demon Hunter, which has operated for over 25 years, claims the film’s massive success and its subsequent commercial expansion—including a soundtrack, merchandise, and an announced global concert tour—create an ‘almost complete overlap’ with the band’s brand. The lawsuit cites instances of consumer confusion, such as a fan mistakenly purchasing $500 in tickets for a Demon Hunter concert believing it was a child-friendly K-pop event.

The band is seeking an injunction to prevent Netflix from using the name for music, live performances, and merchandise, alongside punitive damages. Netflix has responded to the lawsuit, stating that the allegations are ‘without merit’ and that the company intends to vigorously defend the ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ franchise.
