Den Bosch council discusses asylum reception in Engelen

The Den Bosch municipal council has discussed the proposed reception of fifty minor asylum seekers in Engelen. While the debate did not focus on whether the reception should proceed, council members discussed nineteen motions containing conditions and criticisms that the city administration must incorporate into its decision and agreements with the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA).

Significant concerns were raised regarding the livability of Engelen and the suitability of the proposed location at the Beverspijken industrial estate. Some political parties argued that a commercial building is unsuitable for minors who require a domestic and calm environment due to past trauma. Additionally, there are concerns regarding the safety of the young refugees and the potential for social unrest, following previous incidents of vandalism and demonstrations.

To manage potential tensions during the council meeting, security personnel were brought in and evacuation routes for council members were discussed. The municipality maintains the right to close the facility if established agreements are violated.
