Engelen residents protest asylum seeker reception plans

Residents in Engelen and Houten are expressing significant opposition and concern regarding asylum seeker reception plans. In Den Bosch, a public meeting drew approximately one hundred people to discuss the proposed reception of fifty unaccompanied minor asylum seekers at the De Vutter industrial estate.

Many participants voiced distrust toward the municipality, citing a lack of transparency and concerns over the suitability of the location. Reports of local unrest include graffiti, intimidation of residents, and an explosion at the proposed site earlier this year. While some residents support the reception of minors, they specifically oppose the De Vutter location.

Separately, the Minister of Asylum and Migration, Bart van den Brink, has placed the municipality of Houten under active supervision regarding the implementation of the Distribution Act (Spreidingswet). Houten has yet to establish significant asylum reception capacity, and the ministry has escalated its oversight to include direct discussions to ensure the municipality meets its obligations to relieve pressure on Ter Apel.
