Deng Bingqiang recounts raising daughter while stationed at Interpol
Hong Kong Secretary for Security Deng Bingqiang has shared personal anecdotes from his time seconded to the Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France. During this period, Deng acted as a single parent for his daughter, who was 11 years old at the time.
Deng noted that his daughter adapted well to the French education system, which she preferred over the rote learning methods common in Hong Kong. He described her enjoyment of flexible learning environments, such as lessons held at museums or by rivers. He also mentioned that her prior mathematical knowledge gave her a sense of academic satisfaction in the French school system.
Deng recounted the challenges of preparing school lunches, noting that his cooking skills were not strong. After several weeks of attempting to cook Chinese meals, his daughter requested to bring salads to school instead. To foster cultural awareness, Deng intentionally arranged for his daughter to be cared for by a diverse group of international friends from France, China, Singapore, and the United States during his official business trips.
