Deni Avdija cites Trail Blazers decision for absence from Israel national team
Deni Avdija has addressed criticism regarding his absence from the Israel national basketball team during the FIBA World Cup qualifying window. The Portland Trail Blazers player clarified via social media that his inability to participate was due to a complex back injury and a decision by the Trail Blazers organization to prioritize his health.
Avdija stated that the decision was not entirely his own, noting, “Portland wasn’t willing to take a risk with my health, and in the situation that arose, I simply didn’t have the option to step up and play.” He emphasized his commitment to the national team, noting that he has played for Israel in the past even while injured or during contract negotiation years.
Israel’s recent loss to Poland has resulted in the team being eliminated from contention for the 2027 World Cup. Avdija expressed understanding of the disappointment and criticism following the team's performance but maintained that his dedication to representing his country remains unchanged.
