Diana Shnaider wins WTA 500 Tokyo title
Russian tennis player Diana Shnaider secured her sixth career title and her first of the season by winning the WTA 500 Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. In a closely contested final lasting two hours and 18 minutes, Shnaider defeated Canada’s Leylah Fernandez with a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
Shnaider, the tournament’s third seed, overcame a setback in the second set after Fernandez rallied from a 0-4 deficit to take the set 7-5. However, Shnaider regained control in the deciding set to clinch the victory. The win earns Shnaider 500 ranking points and moves her closer to the world top 10.
Fernandez, who reached her third WTA final of the year following a strong Asian swing, was unable to maintain her momentum in the final set. Earlier in the tournament, Slovakian teenager Mia Pohankova made a notable run to the semifinals, where she was defeated by Shnaider.
