Denise Pires de Carvalho appointed UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Sciences

Denise Pires de Carvalho, the current president of CAPES, has been appointed as the Assistant Director-General for Sciences at UNESCO. This appointment marks the first time a Brazilian has held this specific position since the founding of the United Nations in 1945.

UNESCO highlighted Carvalho’s extensive experience in research leadership, international scientific cooperation, and managing programs that address social dimensions of science, such as gender equality and inclusive institutional governance. Carvalho, a physician and former rector of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), emphasized her commitment to multilateralism and 'south-south' cooperation, particularly with Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa.

In her new role, she will oversee the UNESCO Science Sector, which includes managing international scientific cooperation and implementing UN programs in natural and social sciences. Her mandate covers critical areas such as climate change, biodiversity, water resources, and the ethical governance of artificial intelligence.
