Deniz Aytekin reflects on career and online abuse
Retired referee Deniz Aytekin has reflected on his career, highlighting the intense psychological toll of online abuse and threats. Speaking on Robin Gosens’ podcast, the 48-year-old discussed the dichotomy of his final season, which included being named the 2026 DFB Referee of the Year, contrasted against a career marked by significant hostility.
Aytekin noted that while he avoided death threats at the national level in Germany, he faced “brutal” threats and intense verbal abuse during international assignments. He described the experience of sitting in hotel rooms for hours following such incidents. To cope with the constant scrutiny, Aytekin stated he intentionally limited his consumption of social media and news throughout his career.
