Deniz Demir raises supermarket labor conditions in Parliament

Deniz Demir, a Deputy Chairman of the CHP and Ankara MP, has submitted a written parliamentary inquiry to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security regarding the working conditions of employees in chain supermarkets.

The inquiry highlights several allegations, including bans on cashiers sitting while working, insufficient staffing levels, unpaid or underpaid overtime, and excessive workloads. Demir noted that employees are often forced to perform multiple roles simultaneously, such as shelf stocking, product transport, warehouse duties, and cleaning, in addition to cashier tasks.

Demir raised concerns about the impact of prolonged standing on worker health and dignity. The parliamentary questions directed to Minister Vedat Işıkhan seek clarification on whether the Ministry has received complaints regarding sitting bans, whether regulations exist to prevent the obstruction of breaks, and how many inspections have been conducted on chain supermarkets over the last five years.
