Deniz Göktaş sentenced and released after 88-day detention

Turkish comedian Deniz Göktaş has been released from detention following his first court appearance after 88 days in prison. The legal proceedings stem from remarks made during his stand-up show, ‘Ölü Deniz’ (Dead Sea), which were criticized for insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and disparaging religious values.

The Istanbul 14th Criminal Court of First Instance delivered a mixed verdict. Göktaş was sentenced to 11 months and 20 days for insulting the president and 7 months and 15 days for insulting religious values. However, he was acquitted of the charge of praising a crime or criminal. Following the sentencing, the court ordered his release from custody.

During the hearing, Göktaş defended his performance as political satire and humor, arguing that his words were intended as critique rather than insult. He also addressed the organized nature of the complaints against him and noted the challenges of his detention in a high-security facility. The case has drawn significant attention to the boundaries of freedom of expression and political satire in Turkey.
