Turkish fishermen anticipate bountiful bluefish season
Turkish fishermen are preparing for the official end of the general fishing ban on September 1. There is widespread optimism regarding a bountiful season, particularly for bluefish (palamut), which many industry experts suggest could see levels similar to those seen 20 years ago.
In regions such as the Black Sea, Samsun, and Kastamonu, fishermen report high reserves of bluefish, horse mackerel, and chub mackerel. While small-scale fishing resumed on August 15, larger trawlers and purse seiners are waiting for the September 1 opening. Some fishermen in İnebolu noted that they are waiting for rainfall to help clear marine pollution that has been clogging fishing nets.
Despite the expected abundance, some industry leaders have raised concerns regarding high fuel costs and the need for improved port infrastructure. Additionally, while fish stocks appear high, there are concerns regarding low consumer demand due to recent hot weather. In Istanbul, early catches of bluefish are already being sold, with prices expected to stabilize as the large-scale season begins.
