International Day of the Girl Child: Global focus on education and ending child marriage

To mark the International Day of the Girl Child, various organizations and local leaders have highlighted the ongoing challenges facing girls globally, with a focus on education, safety, and economic empowerment.

UNICEF reports that investments in education and legal reforms have helped avert approximately 68 million child marriages over the last 25 years. However, the agency notes that roughly 650 million women and girls alive today were married in childhood, and one in five girls globally are married before age 18. In conflict-affected areas, the risk of being out of school is significantly higher for girls.

In Mexico, efforts include the Rita Cetina scholarship program for primary and secondary students to support school retention. Despite this, reports indicate rising rates of sexual violence against children and ongoing issues with early unions and educational inequality.

In Nigeria, civil society groups like NACTAL and the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) are calling for stronger child protection laws and an end to child marriage, which they argue limits girls' health and economic independence. Meanwhile, in Niger, initiatives like those from Transform Niger aim to promote girls' entrepreneurship and economic empowerment through community engagement and dialogue.
