Denmark: 40,000 turkeys culled due to avian influenza
The first outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza this season has been confirmed in a turkey flock in Bøgelunde, located in Slagelse Municipality. Analysis results from the Statens Serum Institut confirmed the presence of the highly contagious virus.
To ensure animal welfare and prevent further spread, 40,000 turkeys are being culled. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has immediately established protection and monitoring zones around the affected flock. Within these restriction zones, poultry owners must register their birds, and the movement of live birds, eggs, and poultry products is prohibited without special permission. Additionally, markets, exhibitions, and competitions involving poultry are banned in the affected areas.
Veterinarian and unit head Mette Kirkeskov Sie noted that outbreaks are typical during the autumn migration when migratory birds fly over Denmark. Highly pathogenic avian influenza has also been detected in several wild birds in recent weeks. Authorities advise poultry keepers to focus on infection protection, such as changing footwear, and to ensure wild birds cannot access animal feed or water.
