Denmark abandons plan to replace Microsoft Office with open-source software
The Danish government has ended its pilot program aimed at replacing Microsoft Windows and Office with open-source alternatives like Linux and software from the British company Collabora. The initiative was originally intended to reduce reliance on American technology and mitigate risks associated with shifting U.S. political policies.
The pilot program, which involved 38 government employees, faced technical challenges regarding document compatibility. Issues included layout errors and blank pages when exchanging files between Collabora’s Open Document Format (ODF) and Microsoft’s Office Open XML (OOXML) standard.
Following recent elections, officials confirmed the pilot has concluded and will not be resumed. While the government did not conduct a direct performance comparison between Collabora and Microsoft, the technical difficulties highlight the ongoing struggle for open-source office suites to match the established standards of Microsoft Office.
