Denmark abandons promised free parking at hospitals, sparking public anger

Regional authorities in Denmark had pledged free parking at hospitals such as Aarhus University Hospital and Horsens Hospital, estimating a cost of 65 million kroner. The promise, made before the election, was later abandoned after the region could not secure sufficient funding.

Patients and families have expressed frustration after receiving parking fines while seeking care, with several recounting tickets issued during hospital stays and even a childbirth. Politician Jakob Søgaard Clausen of the Denmark Democrats called the broken promise "embarrassing" and a "political stunt," saying the region is left "with hair in the mailbox." Regional council chair Anders G. Christensen acknowledged unforeseen expenses delayed the initiative but said the council understands public disappointment.
