Denmark advances hydrogen pipeline and energy transition plans
Denmark is advancing its green energy infrastructure through new political agreements and strategic shifts in local utility planning. A broad coalition of Danish political parties has reached an agreement to provide greater security for the construction of the ‘Syvtallet’ hydrogen pipeline. This project, to be built by Energinet, will connect Danish hydrogen production facilities to the German border, facilitating hydrogen exports to Germany.
To mitigate investment risks in the immature hydrogen market, the Danish government will increase operational support by 5.6 billion DKK over 30 years, bringing the total allocated support to 16.5 billion DKK for the period 2030–2059. This measure aims to ensure the pipeline is built if minimum capacity requirements are met by users.
On a local level, the energy crisis has forced utility providers like Silkeborg Forsyning to pivot from original electrification plans. Following the surge in electricity and gas prices in 2022, the company moved away from a pure heat pump strategy toward a diversified energy plan that includes a gasification plant to protect consumers from high costs.
