Denmark advances offshore wind energy island plans
Denmark is advancing plans to establish artificial energy islands in the North Sea and at Bornholm in the Baltic Sea to serve as hubs for offshore wind power. These islands are designed to collect electricity from turbines, transmit it to onshore grids and neighboring countries, and convert surplus energy into green fuels using Power-to-X technologies.
Industry organizations, including Dansk Industri, emphasize that achieving the potential of up to 80 GW of offshore wind by 2050 requires a more predictable market. They advocate for a consistent cadence of tenders through 2043 to avoid “stop and go” effects and to provide the stability necessary for long-term multi-billion dollar investments. Proponents argue that stable, affordable wind energy is critical for European industrial competitiveness against the US and Asia.
Projections indicate that Denmark’s electricity generation could rise from 33.6 TWh in 2025 to approximately 43.3 TWh by 2035, with renewable sources expected to account for nearly 98% of generation by that time.
