Denmark Advances Underground Hydrogen Storage for Seasonal Green Power

Denmark is developing a large‑scale underground hydrogen storage system to capture excess renewable electricity for use throughout the year. The initiative, part of the €1.3 billion Power‑to‑X project, will repurpose former North Sea gas storage caverns for safe, low‑cost hydrogen containment, allowing storage for several months. Hydrogen will be produced by electrolyzing water using surplus wind and solar power, then stored underground in specially adapted salt caverns, addressing the intermittency of renewable generation.

If successful, the pilot could demonstrate industrial‑scale hydrogen storage, supporting Denmark’s transition to a carbon‑free energy system and providing a model for similar projects across Europe.
